Krumpöck at the Musikverein

Piano Recital in Dolby Atmos | Album and Video production

With Piano Recital at the Musikverein Wien, this concert film places solo piano in one of Vienna’s most iconic spaces: the Great Hall (Golden Hall) of the Musikverein. Florian Krumpöck performs a program that moves from Schubert’s Viennese sound world through Alban Berg’s focused modernism to Liszt’s richly colored virtuosity, filmed in the hall, recorded with maximum attention to detail, depth, and dynamics.

Repertoire

The recital features works by Franz Schubert, Alban Berg, and Franz Liszt:

  • Franz Schubert: Impromptu in A-flat major, Op. 90 (D 899), No. 4

  • Franz Schubert: Impromptu in A-flat major, Op. 142 (D 935), No. 2

  • Alban Berg: Piano Sonata, Op. 1

  • Franz Liszt: Années de pèlerinage – Deuxième Année “Italie” (excerpts)

    • No. 1 “Sposalizio”

    • No. 7 “Après une lecture de Dante / Fantasia quasi Sonata”

Location & sessions

Filming and recording took place in the Great Hall of the Musikverein Wien. The sessions were held on May 26 and 27, 2020. Krumpöck performed on a Bösendorfer 280VC Vienna Concert, with piano technicians Siebren van Hoog and Christian Schmid.

Acoustics of the Golden Hall: Grand, direct, world-famous

The Golden Hall is renowned for its unique acoustics: clear enough for precision and articulation, yet with exactly the kind of natural space that carries color and projection without blurring detail. For the immersive version, that room image is a perfect foundation, the hall delivers depth and presence almost effortlessly, turning a piano recital into a true spatial experience.

Microphone setup

The goal was a direct, supportive piano sound, while keeping enough room to make the hall feel present:

  • 2× Neumann TLM 50 in front of the piano as the main piano pickup

  • Schoeps main microphones

  • additional Schoeps microphones as extra piano spots and for the immersive/Dolby Atmos capture

Video production: major setup, fully redundant audio

This was produced as a video project. The hall had to be adapted accordingly: seating was removed to accommodate a camera crane, and lighting trusses were installed. Video and lighting were handled by a dedicated crew, our focus was to run the audio production in the Musikverein in a way that integrates cleanly with the video setup and remains reliable under all take conditions. Audio recording was run redundantly, so every take was captured with a full backup.

Dolby Atmos & release

In addition to the DVD release, there is a high-definition streaming version with a Dolby Atmos audio mix. The project was released in November 2024 on Gramola.
