Last Samurai Standing (Netflix)
Solo cello recording | Remote-Session to Japan
For the Netflix series Last Samurai Standing (Japan, 2025), a large-scale score was created, composed by Takashi Ohmama, accompanying the world of the story: a former, once undefeated samurai is drawn into a deadly survival game, a contest that leads from Kyoto to Tokyo and allows only one winner.
The series premiered on the streaming platform Netflix on November 13, 2025. The official soundtrack featuring 28 tracks was released on November 20, 2025 via Netflix Music.
International recording production
The music was realized as an international production, with recording sessions in multiple locations: Vienna Synchron Stage, marinegrau, Kodo Village, NICHION STUDIO, and OPERA Eiffel Art Studio.
Sonically, orchestral colors meet powerful rhythmic accents: recorded were the strings of the Budapest Art Orchestra, the brass of the Vienna Synchron Orchestra, and the distinctive percussion of Kodo (Taiko ensemble).
Cello soloist: Matthias Bartolomey – recording at marinegrau
Matthias Bartolomey was recorded as the cello soloist for the soundtrack in the marinegrau recording room. To achieve the optimal solo sound for Matthias' cello, we used our Schoeps MK2H, Sennheiser MKH50, Coles 4038, and Neumann U87.
For the recording, music producer Daisuke Mizuta traveled to Vienna. To allow the composer to participate in real time, we set up a live connection to Japan, enabling the team there to monitor audio and video at all times in high-resolution quality.
You can hear the cello solo passages on the following tracks:
08 “The Last Breath”
09 “Bukotsu - Destroyer”
15 “Gentosai - God’s Edge”
22 “Clash and Fury”
23 “The Left Behind”
24 “Okubo - The Price of Vision”
25 “Run or Die”
