Mahler I with the WSO & Fedor Rudin
Recording production and concert recording in the Wiener Konzerthaus (Great Hall)
As part of this special production, marinegrau assumed overall technical responsibility for the elaborate recording of the Webern Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Fedor Rudin. The goal was to preserve the sonic finesse and orchestral power of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 in D major “Titan” at the Vienna Konzerthaus for future generations, realized as a Dolby Atmos recording production.
Recording Sessions & Redundancy
The realization of this project extended over several days, during which marinegrau was responsible for recording supervision and technical execution. Two recording days were used to capture the musical performance in the finest detail. Using mobile equipment marinegrau brought a recording studio to the Konzerthaus. To ensure maximum reliability and signal quality, the team implemented a fully redundant recording infrastructure with approximately 48 channels. This level of technical care formed the foundation for a flawless final result without compromise.
The Great Hall – Sonic Perfection
The Great Hall of the Vienna Konzerthaus is considered one of the most acoustically distinguished venues in the world. The task was to authentically capture the natural room sound and the balance of the orchestral sections. Through precise microphone placement and high-end equipment, the unique atmosphere of the hall and the dynamic range of the orchestra under Fedor Rudin’s direction were captured in exceptional quality.
Immersive Experience & Expertise
The focus of the production lay on high-quality delivery in Dolby Atmos. Here, marinegrau’s specialized expertise came fully into play: as one of the few studios officially listed by Dolby as a Dolby Atmos Studio, marinegrau contributed the necessary experience and technical know-how to realize a production at this level. The result is a transparent, three-dimensional sound of outstanding quality that vividly conveys the orchestra’s artistic performance.
